The Toddler class at Wedgwood Co-op offers little ones (age 1-2) an opportunity to explore, play, and interact with other children and parents in a safe and stimulating environment. The class meets once a week on Fridays from 11:30am-1:30pm, and parents stay with kids at school.
Many of our caregivers find lifelong friends in our co-op classes. The Toddlers class is an excellent place to get to know families in our neighborhood and have built-in support from our parent educator about parenting questions or concerns you have. |

Typical Day
A typical day for Toddlers includes repeated rituals as well as new activities.
- For the first half hour, energetic toddlers and parents spend time outside in our outdoor space. There are opportunities to inspect bugs and nature up close with magnifying glasses, drive trucks down ramps, dig in our large sandbox, plus much more.
- When we move inside our classroom, half the parents are assigned to a station (blocks, sensory table, home center, art, etc.) while the other half gather in a separate room for parent education by an instructor in early childhood development from NSC. Toddlers are free to explore, sliding in the climbing room, reading books in our loft, or exploring new toys brought out for that day. They can always go find mom or dad if need be, but over time they gain confidence that it’s okay to leave their sides.
- Finally, Toddlers end the day with circle time, where everyone gathers to sing songs, ring bells, shake parachutes, and say goodbye. Some toddlers may hurry home for nap and lunch, while others gather for play dates, extending our community and time together outside of the classroom.
Parent Participation
Wedgwood follows a cooperative preschool model; family participation is paramount to the experience. In the Toddlers class, a parent or caregiver attends class each week with their child and acts as an "assistant teacher," facilitating stations, helping with set-up and clean-up, and providing support with supervision and classroom management. Parents work as a team with the teacher to help the children engage with activities, problem-solve, and interact with peers. In addition to acting as an assistant teacher, each family is assigned a job at the beginning of the year (class photographer, parent coordinator, registrar, etc...). Families are also expected to sign-up for one weekend cleaning shift throughout the year and participate in and support fundraising efforts.
Wedgwood Co-op is affiliated with North Seattle College. The participating parent is required to enroll in a 3-credit "course" in early childhood development with the college. These credits are completed during preschool class time and at our monthly evening parent meetings. This is a great way to take time to reflect on the highs and lows of parenting, and gain skills and knowledge to help support parents when challenges arise.
The strength of our school community is a reflection of the contributions of our families. Wedgwood Co-op offers a rewarding and enriching experience for both children and their families, and we invite you to join us as we continue to build a supportive and growth-filled learning community!
